“Ang ku kueh” means red tortoise cakes, which are shaped to look like tortoise shells with the Chinese character “shou” or “longevity” imprinted in the centre. They are always shaped like a tortoise but they aren’t always red. Red ones are for birthdays. Black ones are for funerals. Ang ku kuehs are often used as temple offerings particularly during Hungry Ghost and Ching Ming Festivals. It is also presented as an auspicious gift during a baby’s full month celebration.
There are various types of filling for ang ku kueh. The most popular ones are traditional sweet mung bean paste and ground peanuts. There are also other fillings like durian, yam and coconut. The skin, made with glutinous rice flour, should be thin and softly chewy.
Handmade ang ku kueh are a rare find these days. But thankfully some old school confectioneries have soldiered on and continued to roll out these sweet treats for our snacking pleasure. To have a bite of this sweet favourite, here are the best and popular places that sells Ang Ku Kueh in Singapore.
Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh

Love their AKKs. Always a crowd pleaser, especially the rainbow AKKs. The kids love them! Every piece is filled with delicious fillings and the skin is super thin and soft. YUMSSS MAX! They have a variety of different flavors to choose from. My personal favourites are the sweet bean, peanuts, yam and coconut! It is highly addictive and hard to stop at just 1 piece! Easily one of the top AKKs makers in Singapore! I highly recommend you to order online and just drop by the stall to pick up or have them delivered to avoid any disappointment as they are super popular. Website is easy to navigate and ordering is a breeze. If you need customization, you can also WhatsApp them for enquiries. They are highly responsive and helpful too. Highly recommended 👌👍

I have been buying this whenever I want to have Ang Ku Kueh. The Ang Ku Kueh is undoubtedly one of the best if not already the best. Now there is pre-ordering online for delivery that makes it even better. You can just pre-order the day before to have it delivered to your door-step and even at specified time slot. The Ang Ku Kueh in Bamboo Steamer shown here makes a perfect gift, with the flexibility of mix and match the Ang Ku Kueh. It is a perfect dessert indulgence after meal.

The Ang Ku Kueh Hut
– Angeline Chan
I ordered their yam, red bean, peanut and green bean for delivery before. They were wonderful 🙂 I love how the sticky rice is consistently soft throughout the Ang ku kueh, unlike some places where the bottom is a bit dry and hard.

Am surprised to find a shop near Whampoa Market that sells ang ku kueh and decided to try. Very impressed with the texture of the pistachio flavor and really change my impression of how good ang ku kueh can be. Will try other flavors for my next visit. Highly recommended if you are fan of this dessert.

Poh Cheu Soon Kueh and Ang Ku Kueh
– J Syb
Bought their Ang Ku Kueh only because I was curious what the people were lining up for at 11am. Not a fan of Ang Ku Kueh so was happily surprised that I loved their Ang Ku Kuehs. Skin was so soft even the morning after without steaming. Various flavours like peanut, black sesame, coconut, mango, green tea, red bean, durian, pineapple, coffee. Loved the black sesame the most. Nice to know there are still old stores like this that handmakes their food.

Super long queue at this ang ku kueh store. All handmade on the spot and sell a variety of stuffs. Different flavours of ang ku kueh, soon kueh (it’s ‘soon’ kueh not just ‘mang guang’), 算盘子, glutinous rice, etc. The peanut ang ku kueh is simply delicious, probably the best in town!

Kueh Ho Jiak
– Lee Kway Meng
One of the best kueh shop I’ve tried in sg. Their colourful sweet potatoes ang ku kueh was very nice. My mum loves the durian flavour. Was recommended by a friend and ordered online for a self collection. Friendly staffs serving at their stall.
– Zoe Belle
These colourful ang ku kuehs are 100% natural made from different types of sweet potatoes, that’s why they have beautiful purple, orange and yellow hues. The sweet potato skin weren’t sticky nor too thick and is not too oily. It also gives a firm bite. The filling are very generous. I got the peanut and yam and both are extremely toothsome.

Chanced upon this shop after having my breakfast at the hawker. By the way, parking is convenient. I was amazed by the wide variety of kuehs, traditional nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf, dumplings, cakes, spring rolls.. You name it, they have it. Bought the Ang Gu kueh. Skin was just nice. Not too thick and they don’t save on the fillings.
– Eng Chew Tan
A great place with yummy kuehs and wholesale prices. I tried the pumpkin cake and yam cake and ang gu kueh (peanut) and were all quite tasty and fresh.
